Atmel Corporation Introduces Five New Low Power AVR Flash Microcontrollers

Designers Can Turn Off Unused Peripherals and Reduce Power Consumption Up to 50%

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: ATML) announces five new AVR(R) Flash Microcontrollers that significantly expand the MegaAVR(R) product family. These devices are designed to decrease power consumption and enable battery-powered applications. The AVR provides various power management techniques including multiple sleep modes, exceptional C-code density, fast starting high-precision internal RC oscillator and high throughput architecture

The Mega 165, Mega 325 and Mega 645 are housed in a 64 pin TQFP package and have 16, 32 and 64KB of Self-Programmable Flash Memory. The Mega 3250 and Mega 6450 are 32 and 64KB function compatible alternatives in a 100-pin package. These devices have from 1K to 4KB of internal RAM and EEPROM, which provide designers flexibility to incorporate additional features to new versions of a product without having to redesign the hardware portion of the system.

"The MegaAVR(R) Family is a breakthrough technology that will change the way Flash-based Microcontrollers will be used," said Jim Panfil, Director of Microcontroller Marketing. "Atmel's AVR Microcontroller strategy is to develop solutions that help design engineers reduce development costs, design time, power consumption and ultimately production cost. These new low power AVR devices have a typical power consumption of 100nA at 1.8Volts in the Power-down Mode and have integrated brown out protection, power-on reset, watchdog timer and ADC converters," he added.

The five new MegaAVR Family members are ideal for applications requiring a large number of I/O's and need the flexibility of moving up or down in memory densities. To simplify development and manufacturing, the parts are equipped with an IEEE 1149.1 JTAG interface that enables on-chip debug, programming and boundary scan capabilities.

Atmel's ability to integrate non-volatile memory, logic and analog blocks on the same chip creates highly integrated devices that allow end of the line system personalization. The operating and programming voltage can be as low as 1.8V, and the MegaAVR Microcontrollers high performance, low power and competitive cost make it ideal for embedded systems applications. With the ever-increasing pressure to reduce costs, designers will find these highly integrated devices very useful because they take up less board space and reduce inventory cost by allowing last minute design improvements without hardware changes. This makes time-to-market goals easier to reach.

With exceptionally short wake-up times from low power modes, operating range from 1.8 to 5.5 Volts and the industry's best C-code density, the AVR is the best choice for applications requiring low power consumption. At the same time, the parts also offer excellent performance of up to 16 MIPS at 16 MHz.

The first three devices are available now. The 10ku price of the Mega 165 is $3.25, Mega 325 is $3.95 and the Mega 3250 is $4.45. Availability of the 64KB family members is scheduled for 2Q05. The 10ku price of the Mega 645 is $4.45 and Mega 6450 is $4.95. In-circuit emulation and programming of the new family is supported by JTAGICE mk-II, which has a retail price of $299. The STK500 starter-kit and the STK502 expansion module support the 64-pin devices Mega 165, Mega 325 and Mega 645. The 100-pin device Mega 3250 and Mega 6450 use the STK500 and 504 combination. The STK 502 and 504 have a retail price of $99 each.
